What Match Play Events are Played at the Club?
Club Match play Events and Representative Match Play
Most of the regular competitions that members play at the Club are Stroke Play competitions where each player (or team) is competing against all the other players or teams in the competition – competitions such as Single Stroke, Single Stableford, 4 Ball Best Ball (4BBB) and so on.
However the Club also has several Match Play events over the year for its members both closed events and representative events. The main ones are described briefly below.

PATRON’S HANDICAP MATCH PLAY – MEN
The qualifying round is the first monthly medal event for the season, the top sixteen (16) players from the qualifying round contesting the event. Each match is to be handicap match play and is to comprise one stipulated round. Players play each match at their official Daily Playing Handicap at the time that match is commenced. A tie at the conclusion of the stipulated round is to be broken by continuing play from the first hole until one player gains a one hole advantage.
SINGLES MATCH PLAY CHAMPIONSHIPS – MEN & WOMEN
The best eight gross scores in each grade from the 72 holes of the club championships will qualify for the Singles Match Play Championship for each grade. Each match is a gross event and handicaps are not applicable to the matches. A match is to comprise one stipulated round. A tie at the conclusion of the stipulated round is to be broken by continuing play from the first hole until one player gains a one hole advantage.
4BBB MATCH PLAY – MEN & EDNA McLENNAN TROPHY for WOMEN
The qualifying rounds for the competition are the rounds of the Club’s 4BBB Championships for men and women respectively. The eight (8) pairs with the best total NETT scores in each event will qualify. Each match is to be 4BBB handicap match play and is to comprise one stipulated round. Players are to play each match at their Daily Playing Handicap at the time the match is commenced. A tie at the conclusion of the stipulated round is to be broken by continuing play from the first hole until one pair gains a one hole advantage.
HANDICAP MATCH PLAY – WOMEN
The best eight (8) nett scores from competitors in the Women’s Rose Bowl Competition who indicate that they wish to compete in the match play, will qualify for handicap match play. Each match is to be handicap match play and is to comprise one stipulated round. Players are to play each match at their Daily Playing Handicap at the time the match is commenced. A tie at the conclusion of the stipulated round is to be broken by continuing play from the first hole until one pair gains a one hole advantage.
MOBIL OIL SHIELD – MEN
Teams from the Mackay and Rockhampton Golf Clubs compete annually for the Mobil Oil Shield. The Team consists of approximately thirty players in a 4BBB event and is played alternatively each year at Mackay and Rockhampton. The Shield was inaugurated in 1976 by club captains Noel Russell (Rockhampton) and Ted Bean (Mackay). The event is normally scheduled for the third week-end in October. Each even year, Mackay members travel to Rocky whilst in the odd years Rocky comes here to Mackay.
In 2016, Mackay narrowly lost the shield in Rockhampton 8 matches to 7 with 3 squares. As at 2016, Mackay leads the contest overall by 22 wins to 17 with one rained out and another not contested because of flooding.

KRAFT WALKER SHIELD – MEN
The Kraft Walker Shield for Men, an annual competition between the Mackay and Sarina Golf Clubs, was first conducted in the 1960’s with the Shield being donated by the Kraft Walker Power Alcohol Distillery. The Manager at the time was Mr. Holmes, a keen supporter of the Sarina Golf Club and other sporting bodies in the district.
The Shield is played on a home and away basis each year, as a 4BBB teams event with each team consisting of eighteen players. The first match each year is played on the course of the Club that currently holds the Shield. Members will be invited to nominate (in pairs) for selection after the relevant notice appears on the Club Notice Board.
TOYOTA SHIELD – WOMEN
The Toyota Shield was donated by International Motors in 1979 to provide an annual 4-Ball inter-club match play competition for women between the Mackay and Sarina Golf Clubs. This annual event is a Handicap Match play competition played between teams of fourteen (14) players from each Club. It is played at Mackay and Sarina in alternate years.
PIONEER VALLEY CHALLENGE – CLIVE ROGERS TROPHY – MEN
The Challenge is a 4BBB teams event with each team consisting of eighteen players, played on a home and away basis each year. The Trophy recognizes the contribution made by Clive Rogers to the Pioneer Valley region. Clive is a member of Pioneer Valley Club and was a past chairman of the Mirani Shire for several years. The original trophy was donated by McKays Solicitors.
GOLF NORTH QUEENSLAND – NQ PENNANTS – MEN and WOMEN
NQ Pennants competitions for Men are held over two days in three grades, A, B and C, in groups of 4 clubs in each division in each of the grades. Matches are played off scratch and teams from the clubs play in the Divisions resulting from the previous year’s pennants. Teams comprise 7 players and an optional reserve. In 2017, players in B Grade had GA handicaps 9.5 and above, C Grade 17.5 and above. The Match Committee invites expressions of interest at the appropriate time and team selection is mainly based on performance criteria.
NQ Pennant Matches are played annually, usually in July in three grades – SILVER, BRONZE and COPPER – each in pools of 4 clubs. Teams usually comprise six players, five to play each match. Matches are played under Handicap Matchplay conditions.
