2012 NQ PENNANTS
B & C GRADE MEN

Congratulations to our C-Grade Pennant team which won the Division 2 Pennant after 3 tough wins at Sarina Golf Club on Saturday & Sunday 28th & 29th April.

Each Club plays 7 Matchplay matches against 3 other clubs over the weekend, and points are allocated for team wins and squares. The club with the highest score over the weekend wins the Pennant.

A 4/3 win over Glenden in the first match on Saturday morning  set up the C-Grade win and it was consolidated with convincing wins over Lavarack 5½/1½ on Saturday afternoon and Pioneer valley on Sunday morning 5½/1½ .

Captain Russell Hoy was impressed by the form and determination of all of his team which was led by Dave Watling, Peter McCowan and Laurie Brown who all won their 3 matches. Not to be out done, 11 year old youngster Caleb Purdy, in his 2 matches, halved his first match and followed up with a convincing 6 & 4 victory in his second.

The C-Grade team will now be elevated to Division 1 for 2013.

In our other match, the B Grade side again finished runners up to the hosts, Sarina this year, after last year’s narrow loss to Ayr.

A tough first up encounter against Sarina on their home track resulted in a 4/3 loss which made the difference on the weekend.

Solid wins over Proserpine 6/1 during the afternoon matches and another good win over Willows 5½/1½ on Sunday morning still wasn’t good enough as Sarina also won both their other matches.

There were outstanding performances by Ren Durelli, Daryl Bruce and Jamie Aplin who all won their 3 matches. Rick Hospers won both his matches but captain Greg Coad lost all 3 tosses and will look to 2013 to hopefully redeem himself and get the B Grade side into Division 1 with our C Grade mates.

A big thanks to everyone involved and especially the sponsors, Bank of Queensland (Mike Meynell) and Coady’s Electrical for their support.  Another great weekend of golf and we look forward to next year with confidence.

ECLECTIC & CONSISTENCY 2012
MEN & WOMEN

Eclectic and Consistency competitions for 2012 have commenced.

ECLECTIC - MEN & WOMEN: in grades - any individual Club event played from the Blue Blocks.

Based on gross score achieved on each individual hole over the competition "year".  Points are awarded for par, birdie, eagle and better on each hole, depending on your grade.

You must register, and circle any score you wish to be recorded.  Only circle scores that are better than a previously recorded score for a hole.

CONSISTENCY: All single stroke Club events (from the Blue Blocks for men) are automatically recorded.  Points from 10 to 1 are awarded for the leading 10 gross and nett scores for each event, the best 15 rounds determining a players score for the year in each category.

The year's competitions end on Saturday 10 November 2012.

PRO-SKILLS CHALLENGE 2012
MEN & WOMEN

The ProSkills Challenge is a new competition in 2012 for Men and Women, sponsored by ProSkills.

Up to 12 normal Saturday Single Stableford Club Events run between February and the end of November will be designated as ProSkills Challenge events.

Players must play in a minimum of 7 of these ProSkills Challenge events to qualify for the challenge.

The best 7 scores of each player that qualifies for the ProSkills events will be averaged and the Challenge Yearly Winners will be the best averaged scores (for Men and for Women).  The last round will be scheduled before the Club's Presentation Night, where the winners will be announced.

HOW TO LEAVE THE RAKE IN THE BUNKER
TO PREVENT DOWNHILL LIES
AVOID DOWNHILL LIES LIKE IN THE FOREGROUND:

To avoid the bunker rakes causing difficult downhill lies, the Match Committee has recommended that all rakes be placed in the bunkers as shown below.

The end of the rake handle should be placed out of the bunker with the rake head on the level sand.

Try to pick a spot where you can leave enough space under the rake handle for the ball to run under without being stopped.

For bunkers in front of the green, place the handle facing the direction of play, or if feasible, on the side of the bunker away from the apron to the green.

The principle behind this method is to avoid having to walk through the bunker to retrieve a rake, avoid any part of the rake stopping a ball on a downhill lie and minimising the likelihood that the rake will interfere with the rolling ball.

PREFERRED LIES AND
BUNKERS DECLARED GUR

PREFERRED LIES:

When the Committee declares a Local Rule which allows "Preferred Lies", it means that you may lift your ball after marking it's position, clean it and place it within one card length no nearer the hole.

Unless it is specified "on the closely mown areas of the course", this applies to anywhere "through the green" (ie anywhere except on the teeing ground or green of the hole being played or in any hazard).

WHOLE BUNKER DECLARED GUR:

When the Committee declares a Local Rule which declares ALL of a  Bunker as GUR, this automatically declares the Bunker as an integral part of the course (ie the Bunker is no longer a Bunker).

Therefore the general rule for GUR applies - You may play the ball as it lies, or take complete relief from the GUR without penalty (ie drop outside the GUR within one club length - see rule 25).

If Preferred Lies are also in force, and you choose to "play from the GUR", you may lift, clean and place the ball as above.

If the bunker is declared "Compulsory GUR" you MUST take relief from the GUR and must not play from the areas declared Compulsory GUR.

PART OF A BUNKER DECLARED GUR:

Note that when only a part of a Bunker is declared GUR, relief can only be taken by dropping in the Bunker without penalty, or else outside the bunker under a one-stroke penalty.

PROCEDURE FOR SEVERE
WEATHER EVENTS

Members are reminded of the dangers of being on the golf course when a thunder storm is approaching.  It is the player's responsibility to ensure their own safety when severe weather events are approaching or in progress.

When the Match Committee of the day or Club Management sees a severe weather event developing, they may direct immediate cessation of play by sounding 3 short blasts of a siren, which may be repeated a number of times.

On hearing this signal, all players MUST immediately cease play and seek the safety of the Clubhouse.  At the player's discretion, the ball may be marked in case play in the event recommences.

DO NOT SHELTER UNDER TREES.

Recommencement of play after such a weather event will be at the discretion of the Match Committee of the Day.

Note that a single blast of the siren indicates a siren test only, and no immediate action is necessary.

HANDICAPPING & COURSE
RATING SYSTEM CHANGES
The first stages of the changes to the handicapping system are in place and being used for calculating your handicaps.

Bulletins are published on the GA website - refer to our GolfLink page to link to the GA web site.

INCREASE YOUR ENJOYMENT AND THE
ENJOYMENT OF OTHERS - HELP SPEED UP PLAY!

Do you enjoy waiting between every shot for the group in front to play on? Do you really think that a round should take more than 5 hours?

It is a fact that groups leading the field often finish their round in less than 4 hours!

You can help to speed up play by taking a few simple steps and by encouraging others to do the same. Yes, your game is important, but we are not playing for the British Open, yet.

Here are a few tips that you can use to help reduce the time to play a round by 30 - 60 minutes.

Move quickly to your ball between strokes, without interfering with your co-player's next shot.  You don't need to go to each of your fellow competitors' balls. They know how to play their shot without your encouragement!

Try to avoid having more than one practice swing. Work out your swing problems on the practice fairway, not on the course.

If you need to work out something with your swing, do so while others are hitting, out of their line of sight.

If you are going to have trouble finding your ball, call through the waiting group behind immediately - don't wait for the 5 minute search time.

Everyone can have a bad day - don't let your bad day spoil it for others!

Always play a provisional ball if you think you might not be able to find your ball (outside a hazard) or if your ball might be out of bounds.

Murphy's Law ensures that your provisional ball will be just about the best shot you have ever hit!

Be ready to play as soon as it is your turn.  Consider the HWR (Hit when Ready) method if your co-players are OK with it.

On the putting green, try to read your line while others are preparing to putt, without interfering with the other players, and putt out when ever possible.

Move quickly to the next tee and tee off promptly as soon as it is safe to do so.  If you have the honour, mark your card while the others are teeing off.  Leave your pull buggy where you can clear the green for the following group to play as quickly as possible.

In Par, Stableford and 4BBB competitions, pick up as soon as your next shot no longer counts.

Above all, keep up with the group in front, not just ahead of the group behind.

Please remember that for every 10 minutes longer that you take to play your game, you are denying 8 people from having a game, and costing the club (ie YOU!) $10,000 a year.

YOUR CHANCE TO CUT DOWN
THOSE TREES YOU HATE

Dad's Army is a great band of workers that gather for 4-5 hours on Wednesday mornings at 6am.

These volunteers do a lot of work with our greens staff to keep our course in great condition.

They have been largely responsible for all the new cart paths springing up around the course, but also trim the trees, mow fairways, poison weeds and generally do those little jobs that make a difference to the look and feel of the course.

They have also been working flat out since the cyclone to remove damaged and dangerous trees around the course, but there is still more to be done, especially now since the recent extended wet weather.

Our regular volunteers would love a hand and would welcome new blood into the team.  There are jobs for everyone, whatever your skill levels and capabilities.  If you can spare a Wednesday morning - every Wednesday morning or just now and again - come along and give a hand and enjoy working in the great outdoors with a great group of people. Even an hour or two would be appreciated.

The morning usually concludes with a get-together in the clubhouse for a snack and refreshments.

Please come along and give a hand. Contact Dave Hiskens on 4955 3273 - he is the leader of the gang.
